Digging through the archive this week we found an old-school post that we'd totally forgotten about. How cool is this creation, though? It's a pinhole camera that uses a Unitas 6497 hand-wound watch movement to mechanically control the shutter mechanism. Designed and hand-made by a photographer named Kwanghun Hyan, this mechanical marvel creates interesting images and must feel incredible to hold and shoot. This week's pre-owned picks are about the neo-vintage watches in our collection. The ones that aren't ready for their AARP card nor are they young enough to escape the patina of tritium or the scratches that come with non-ceramic bezels. In place of the caliber HMC 902 in the chronograph that introduced us to the Streamliner aesthetic is the time-only HMC 200. It's been used in H. Moser's Pioneer, Endeavor, and Heritage lines before. Another element that's also shared with the Pioneer series is the Globolight inserts that form the 3D hands. The material is ceramic-based, and includes Super-LumiNova. replica Richard Mille rm 38 She figured if the watch came to her again, then she'd reconsider. Otherwise, it wasn't meant to be. "But it was killing me," she said. "The historical significance, the design, the whole thing." So she did something about it. This was in 2018, so she went to Singapore to hunt one down. The independent scene in China is growing rapidly, and it's long past time for detractors to shed antiquated notions about what "Made in China" can mean in the watch industry. Interestingly, I spoke to Mgraver's founder, Shiming Yang, years ago when he was a source for my story on C.H. And I do understand that perspective – I'd be wary to drop approximately $10,000 on a watch I might not feel comfortable wearing due to its large size; especially since, unlike the Spring Drive Diver models, I've always found examples of the Spring Drive Chronograph GMT to wear true to their stated dimensions. To put it frankly – these are big watches that wear big.
If I had not gone to all of these watch enthusiast collector meetings over the years, I wouldn't have had a true pulse on the industry ... So this week's movie  has a pretty good timepiece backstory. In fact, HODINKEE contributor and purveyor of the wildly popular, all things Heuer, On The Dash, Jeff Stein had a hand in the watch-sourcing process. According to his account of events, they were going to present Brad Pitt with two watches to choose from for the film. And there didn't seem to be anything in the digital catalogs of past auctions. Getty Image searches for Louise Astor Van Alen, and attempts at spotting the watch on her wrist returned nothing. A message to the HODINKEE Slack seemed to further indicate that no one had ever seen a classic Cintrée born with a salmon dial. Bonus pick! I was immediately taken by the design of Marin Instruments when Hodinkee first covered the brand in 2022, so was excited to learn that founder Justin Walters just launched another brand, Alterum Watch Company. Alterum has just released its first watch, the Worldtimer. It's a minimalist, brutal take on the globe-trotting complication. The rise in popularity of the "quiet luxury" aesthetic stems, like most fashion trends, from the pop culture zeitgeist: picture the cast of Succession, Cate Blanchett in Tàr or Gwyneth Paltrow's recent trial wardrobe. And let's not forget that the economic climate has massive sway on what designers deem suitable for the runway. In 2023 it feels somewhat démodé to be bandying about logo-clad handbags and yellow gold sport watches.
The folks behind Daniel Roth are certainly playing it slow and steady, but the product to me bears optimism for the future of what the modern take on the brand will hold. For a Rolex redemption story set to a half-hour of smooth tunes, do yourself a favor and watch the video below, brought to the world by the YouTube channel Master Watchmaker. I was not aware of this channel or this specific video until the good folks at Time+Tide posted about it here, but I'm glad they did as, at least within the world of watch enthusiasm, the video is both wholesome and entirely entertaining.
